CHAPTER 9

Jessica strolled through the hallway on Friday morning in her cheerleading uniform, enjoying the

admiring glances of the male population of SVH, as always. There was nothing she loved more

than game day. The whole school was decorated with red and white banners and pennants and

the energy in the hallway was palpable. Plus she did adore her uniform. There was no one on the

squad who wore it better.

"Hey, Jess, you should enjoy that uniform while you can," Drea Mattea said as Jessica passed her. Drea not only looked pudgy and short in her uniform but was also bitter that Jessica, as a

junior, had been made captain over her, a senior.

"Whatever that means," Jessica said, rolling her eyes.

"Do you really not know?" Drea looked at her friends in wonder, then walked over to face off with Jessica. "Showing up late, leaving early, skipping practices entirely? Coach is pissed, Jess.

If she doesn't toss you off the squad, she's going to at least demote you. And I, for one, would be so, so sad to see that happen."

She fake-pouted, then cackled right in Jessica's face before turning and sauntering away with her cohorts, all of them giggling and jeering. Jessica felt as if her entire life were flashing before her eyes. Drea couldn't be serious. It was just the green-eyed monster talking. There was no way

Coach would kick her off the team....

The warning bell rang and Jessica sprinted to her locker, her heart pounding. She could not let

this happen. From this moment on, she was going to be the perfect little cheerleader. No more

messing around. She grabbed some books out of her locker, then beelined it for Bruce's, hoping

for a distracting good-morning kiss before class. She found him rummaging through his things

with his back to the hallway. Unlike the rest of the school, Bruce was too cool to dress up for

game day, but he looked so hot in his black V-neck sweater over a gray T-shirt Jessica couldn't

have cared less. Suddenly, her heart was pounding for a whole different reason. She put her

hands over his eyes and leaned toward his ear.

"Guess who?"

"Hmm ... must be the girl I'm taking out to dinner tonight."

Jessica's heart leapt but then instantly dropped. She drew her hands back nervously. "Tonight?"

Bruce turned around with a sexy smile on, but his expression quickly changed when he took in

her outfit. "What the hell are you wearing?"

Jessica's knees quaked with uncertainty. This was not the greeting she had been hoping for. She

decided to go with a sweet, flirty response. Best to ignore the obvious irritation and make light of it.

"It's my uniform," Jessica said, turning around to give him the full three-hundred-sixty-degree view. "I thought you liked miniskirts."

"And I thought you were done with that crap," Bruce said, slamming his locker.

Jessica flinched, startled. "I never said that," she replied. "I'm still on the team, and we have a game tonight. We always wear our uniforms to school on game day, remember?"

"Yeah, well, it's not game day for you," Bruce said darkly. "I made plans.
